Saturday Night

Julian Dawson

We met up with Julian Dawson at a festival in summer 2015 and got on so well we all decided to work together. Julian hasn't gigged vey much in the UK recently, so the aim is to bring his international success to UK stages... With the October 2015 release of his new album, Living Good - reminiscent of a contemplative John Sebastian - Julian now has 23 solo albums to his credit as well as the five he recorded as a member of Iain Matthews' Plainsong. After spending many years performing in the United States and Europe he now wants to tour the UK again as a solo performer in readiness for festivals in 2016 and beyond. He also has a chat and sing show (with Q  & A if required) about his expereinces of workign with soe of the greats of the music industry ...

Songs and Stories from inside the music industry

With a back catalogue of more than 700 songs, including collaborations with giants of folk, country, rock and pop, Julian Dawson has experienced the music industry here and in the USA from the inside, and has some great stories to share, as well as amazing music.

Julian has worked with many of the leading artists of our time and has a feast of fascinating anecdotes. Duane Eddy, Little Feat, Richard Thompson, Charlie Louvin, Gene Parsons, John Sebastian, Gerry Rafferty, Melanie, Al Stewart, Del Amitri and Glen Tilbrook: all have left their mark and helped him hone his craft. Now you can hear his unique memories and insights, sound-tracked by the music he made – and is still making.

Julian has recorded at some of the best and most famous studios, including Abbey Road, where he played with, among others, Al Stewart and Randy Edelman, and Quad in Nashville, where Neil Young made 'Harvest' and Bob Dylan made 'Blonde On Blonde'.

In forty years as a writer and professional musician, Julian’s journey in songs has taken him all over the world. After top forty hits and countless tours, he still has a passion for music, is still giving vibrant, improvised concerts, and is still making albums. Last year’s Living Good was his twenty-third!

In the words of a well-known country song, you’re known by the company you keep - and Julian has kept some pretty amazing company. As well as Lucinda Williams and Dennis Locorriere (Dr Hook), he has co-written with a who’s who of music: soul legend Dan Penn; country superstar Vince Gill, Nicky Hopkins, Bill Lloyd and Iain Matthews (of Fairport Convention, Southern Comfort and Plainsong), all of whom also appear on his albums. He even found time to write an acclaimed biography of Nicky Hopkins, talking to Keith Richards, Pete Townshend and others along the way.

Unusually for a Brit, he is as much at home in the USA as he is in England.  He arrived in ‘Music City’ in 1989, pulling back the curtains on his first morning in Nashville to reveal a guitar-shaped swimming pool, and going on to eat breakfast back to back with George Jones and Conway Twitty! He was only later aware that he had caught the tail end of the ‘old’ Nashville and experienced Austin, Texas, when it was still cool.

Julian Dawson is a big man with a big talent, and an evening in his company is a real treat.
