Happy Valley Roots Revival:

Des Horsfall & Kuschty Rye

STOP PRESS: listen to Des and his single Chameleon with Pete Townshend here.

Alongside his role as part of Des Slim Chance Des has his own Kuschty Rye project - based on the music, life and times of Ronnie Lane. Des' new ‘Rustic Rock n Roll’ outfit Des Horsfall’s Kuschty Rye. Kuschty Rye's critically acclaimed album The Good Gentleman’s Tonic  has been followed by a second The Bastard's Tin, which also features Slim Chance members Benny Gallagher, Charlie Hart and Steve Simpson. The Who's Pete Townshend, was so impressed with The Good Gentleman's Tonic that he has contributed a song and appears with guitar and vocal on the second album.  The project features many Ronnie Lane songs (The Poacher, Oh La La and others) plus Des' original compositions in similar style.

A third album in the Ronnie Lane Trilogy will be released in the Spring, in time for Ronnie's 70th birthday.

Happy Valley Roots Revival

Des also has a duo show for smaller venues: Happy Valley Roots Revival: a show based on US and UK roots covers. They perform classic songs from the 60s & 70s Country, Folk & Rock genres with a selection of all time greats and modern classics thrown in for good measure. Add a hearty dose of humourous banter, and you're in for a highly entertaining gig. Expect to hear great songs like Wichita Lineman, Lay Down, Proud Mary, When will I be loved, Ooh La La, Maggie May and many more well know.
Dave says it great - you'd better listen!

The Des Horsfall Story...

Previously Des had worked with with various Roots/Country-Rock band line-ups from his West Yorkshire base since the late ‘70s. In the mid 80s he fronted Blues-Rock band Raw Deal that was managed by the legendary Alexis Korner until his untimely death.

In the 1990s Des was to be seen in hit videos on CMT and as opening act for Joe Ely, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Chuck Prophet and many others. This lead to a solo recording contract with fledgling London label Southbound Records, and his first commercial album release ‘Easy Road’. The record was produced by fellow Yorkshireman and highly respected songwriter and producer, Jon Strong.

'Easy Road' established Horsfall as a mainstream country/roots-rock artist and gained him popularity and recognition amongst the country and roots music communities. Videos of songs from the album enjoyed heavy rotation on Country Music Television and VH-1. 'Easy Road' also received substantial airplay on radio, including the Bob Harris and Nick Barraclough shows on BBC Radio 2.

The end of the 1990s saw Des working with producer Gary Hall on his second studio album ‘Mixed Grill’ adding Blues and Folk influences into the pot. After touring 'Mixed Grill' with his band ‘Fallen Horses’, he entered the new Millennium with a live album ‘Breathing the Same Air’, which was produced by Gary Nattrass.

What they say:

Pete Townshend:  ” a killer record….KILLER!”

Acoustic Magazine: “Des’s songs hint at greatness, with a good time feel of which Ronnie would have been proud”

Folk and Roots: If I didn’t know different, I’d have taken this record for a lost Ronnie Lane album, so striking is the similarity in vibe and sound on the opening track, a rollin’-rockin’, laid-back cover of Careless Love that strides an endearing and efficacious good-time way through the old chestnut and gives due breathing space for some tasty soloing along the way in time-honoured fashion.
